Trends

This tropical trend has been around a while but I wanted to use it as an example of how far reaching trends can be. It is not uncommon for trends to permeate through all fields of popular culture. From fashion to interiors, art and design to advertising and even textiles.

Because this particular trend has been so prolific it always starts a conversation around when following trends become contrived? I suppose when you talk about trends you are invariably led into the whole 'originality vs plagiarism" debate. For some diehard design fans they see many trend followers as contrived and copycat. They poo poo mass produced products saying that they are less superior as their 'boutique', 'one-of-a-kind', 'original' pieces. I say something is as cool as you want it to be, whether there are 5 of them in the world or 5 million. If something means more to you because there's only one then thats fine but it doesn't mean if someone else has a mass produced item it's any less valuable to them.
