Trying my hand at Calligraphy

calligraphy

I decided on a whim to increase my set of skills surrounding graphic design. It's all good designing pretty stuff on a computer but it doesn't feel very crafty.

I was finding it difficult to decide on what to master. It wasn't until I had a brain wave while designing some wedding stationary for the wonderful Rhonnie at Harlow Garland (a boutique wedding and event planner). It struck me that crafting custom calligraphy for clients would bring a more personal touch to their weddings. One of a kind pieces to suit the bride and grooms personalities, yes please! And there you had it, my new skill was chosen. Now all I have to do is learn it...

So I have committed to a couple of hours a week where I sit down and get mildly frustrated with a fountain pen. I am not good at sucking at something. I tend to avoid anything that I can't do well. But unfortunately with calligraphy, practise makes perfect and I'm not going to spontaneously wake up and be awesome at it.

I can see myself getting better already and there is a definite possibility of a future full of ligatures and flourishes ahead. Right now I just have to graduate from a pen to a flash nib and ink pot. I have a feeling using ink as a 'Leftie' is going to fun.
